Publix Closely Eyeing Students’ Recruiting Ideas

The ideas two Whitewater High students from Fayette County have for getting more Generation X and Y persons to apply for positions at Publix Supermarkets have captured the attention of the company’s top brass.

DECA students Yanna Banks and Lia Poulson are one of three teams, and the only one in Georgia, to make it through to the third and final round in the Publix Brand Champion Challenge, a competition open to DECA students that involves creating a fully integrated marketing program to attract 16-25 year-old applicants to the stores. DECA is a student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.

Publix is flying the students to its headquarters in Lakeland, Florida, all expenses paid, to make a formal presentation to top officials in March or April. The judges will pick first, second and third place teams, and award them cash and prizes totaling over $3,000 to more than $4,000.

The students began the competition by submitting a 10-minute video of their ideas based on a hypothetical budget of $250,000. Their video earned them one of 12 team semi-finalist spots along with an opportunity to submit a written plan of their employment branding program.

Having made the cut to round three, team Yanna and Lia are already winners, but they are ready to give their live presentation and nail first place in the competition.

“All three of these teams are special to be able to beat out the competition. Congratulations on their hard work and strong results. They should be proud of themselves,” says Patti Breckenridge, recruiting manager for Publix Supermarkets.

The Publix Brand Champion Challenge was open to students in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Fayette County School Employees Receive Psychology Advocacy Award

The Georgia Association of School Psychologists has recognized two Fayette County Public School employees for their efforts in encouraging the state to keep psychologists in public schools.

School Superintendent Dr. John DeCotis and Fayette County Alternative School principal Tim Carter were presented certificates of Excellence in Advocacy during a school system administrative meeting. Association president Deborah Crockett, who is also a school psychologist for the school system, surprised the two recipients with the awards.

“Last year when the state was considering removing school psychologists, I asked Dr. DeCotis and Mr. Carter to write letters of support emphasizing the value of school psychologists. Both of them did and we are still here thanks to their efforts,” says Crockett.

School psychologists are state and nationally certified professionals. They help students who are having learning, behavioral and emotional problems by conducting comprehensive psycho-educational assessments and interventions. They also serve the school system by consulting with teachers, parents and administrators, aiding them with information and recommendations; conduct research to help promote effective forms of learning, discipline and social interaction; and are liaisons and effective personnel in the event of a crisis, helping to alleviate the stressors and promote a healthy transition in the schools and community.

Fayette County Excels For Exceptional Children

The Fayette County School System strives to ensure that all students receive the best education possible while arming them with the skills they will need to succeed in today’s competitive environment.

For the seventh year in a row since the award’s inception, the school system’s Exceptional Children’s program has been recognized for excellence in the education of students with disabilities by the Georgia Department of Education.

The Pacesetter Award, which was presented at the Georgia Council for Administrators of Special Education (GCASE), marks the school system as a leader in the state for outstanding efforts to improve the performance of students with disabilities. Fayette is the only school system in Georgia to have received the award seven consecutive years.

The award distinguishes excellence in six areas of achievement: decreasing the number of students who drop out, achieving a higher percentage of graduates with regular education diplomas, educating students in the least restrictive environment, transitioning students to their desired postsecondary outcomes, increasing the percentage of students who meet or exceed state achievement standards and reducing the gap in achievement between students with disabilities and their general education peers.

Director Chris Horton oversees Fayette’s Exceptional Children’s program.

Georgia company SmARTlens Corporation recognized with Academy Award for Technical Achievement

Georgia was on the mind of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Saturday, February 7. Steve Hylén, creator of SmARTlens Corporation’s Hylén System, accepted an Academy Award for Technical Achievement at the 81st annual Scientific and Technical Academy Awards dinner and show.

“We are honored to have such an outstanding, innovative company here in Georgia,” said Ken Stewart, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). “SmARTlens is the type of company we work hard to bring to the state, and its strong connections to the entertainment industry tie in well with our mission.”

Hylén’s award cited the groundbreaking nature of the Hylén System, a device that affixes to film and digital cameras to allow directors and cinematographers to produce visual effects within the camera instead of in post-production.

Randall Abney, SmARTlens Corporation’s president and CEO, noted that the Hylén System is, to the best of his knowledge, the first Technical Achievement Academy Award involving a Georgia-based company. The company is investigating opening an office/assembly facility in the Athens area and is working with GDEcD Small Business & Innovation Regional Project Manager Ryan Thornton.

“It is an honor to have a group such as the Sci/Tech committee, which was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Academy, understand the technology of the invention and the patents,” Mr. Hylén said in Beverly Hills after the presentation. “I am very proud that they have endorsed the technology and its future possibilities. The road has been long and is by no means over; but this endorsement by such an astute group of experienced professionals gives me hope for additional development and innovation for the Hylén System.”

“The Academy’s recognition of the Hylén System as an important development in cinematography validates our belief that the Hylén System can have a major impact - creatively and financially - in the making of feature films, commercials, music videos, and television programs,” Abney said after the presentation.

“Georgia has been the backdrop for more than 33 nominated films and 25 Academy Award-winning films since 1972,” said Bill Thompson, Deputy Commissioner of the Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Division of GDEcD. “The first known film to be produced in Georgia was in 1912, in the days before Hollywood. And now, for a Georgia-based company to receive a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy brings everything full circle. Congratulations to Steve Hylén and his team for such an outstanding achievement. The nine feature films currently shooting in Georgia salute you! We look forward to promoting the SmARTlens product to our customers.”

Munson Puts Starr’s Mill High on the Radar at Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament

Imagine walking into your office and being told that you have just 30 minutes to research and prepare a persuasive seven-minute speech on a particular topic. Well, if you were Molly Munson, you would not even break a sweat.

Molly, a student at Starr’s Mill High, was awarded second place in Extemporaneous Speaking at the 25th annual Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament held last month at the University of Florida. She competed against 51 high school students from Georgia, Pennsylvania and Florida to win the coveted honor.

Before the tournament even started, Molly proved she could hold her own against some very competitive debaters. She was one of six students selected to participate in the annual Blue Key Round Robin that foreshadows the general tournament. Only the nation’s most skilled and accomplished student speakers are invited to participate.

After competing in five grueling rounds with a cross examination after each speech, Molly emerged victorious taking third place in the Mixed Extemporaneous Speaking division.

“She had the eventual winner, the current national champion, shaking in his boots. She has done the best of any Starr’s Mill student in the history of the school,” says Molly’s proud mother Sue Munson.

Nine students from Starr’s Mill, including Molly, participated in the tournament. Eric Bogert, Hannah Mattia, Martin Halicek and Jacob Nails competed in the Lincoln Douglas Debate and Aaron Ash, Noah Brunner, Lauren Mattia and Syneva Runyan were competitors in the Public Forum Debate.
