Publix Closely Eyeing Students’ Recruiting Ideas

The ideas two Whitewater High students from Fayette County have for getting more Generation X and Y persons to apply for positions at Publix Supermarkets have captured the attention of the company’s top brass.

DECA students Yanna Banks and Lia Poulson are one of three teams, and the only one in Georgia, to make it through to the third and final round in the Publix Brand Champion Challenge, a competition open to DECA students that involves creating a fully integrated marketing program to attract 16-25 year-old applicants to the stores. DECA is a student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.

Publix is flying the students to its headquarters in Lakeland, Florida, all expenses paid, to make a formal presentation to top officials in March or April. The judges will pick first, second and third place teams, and award them cash and prizes totaling over $3,000 to more than $4,000.

The students began the competition by submitting a 10-minute video of their ideas based on a hypothetical budget of $250,000. Their video earned them one of 12 team semi-finalist spots along with an opportunity to submit a written plan of their employment branding program.

Having made the cut to round three, team Yanna and Lia are already winners, but they are ready to give their live presentation and nail first place in the competition.

“All three of these teams are special to be able to beat out the competition. Congratulations on their hard work and strong results. They should be proud of themselves,” says Patti Breckenridge, recruiting manager for Publix Supermarkets.

The Publix Brand Champion Challenge was open to students in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Fayette County's McIntosh High School Takes State Academic Bowl Championship Again

Starr’s Mill Finishes Second in Jr. Varsity

After finishing first in the Griffin RESA High School Academic Bowl (varsity division), Fayette County's McIntosh High School repeated its performance at the statewide meet, successfully defending its state championship.

For the past two seasons, the team has been 47-0. Team members include Andrew Gifford, Emma Kearney, Will Kearney (captain), David Wonderley and Conner Pigott. Melody Wonderley is the team’s coach.

Other Fayette County varsity teams that earned placements at the RESA regional competition included Whitewater High (Team A), second; Starr’s Mill High (Team A), third and Whitewater High (Team B), fifth.

The RESA regional junior varsity division was dominated by Fayette County with Starr’s Mill taking first followed by Fayette County, second; McIntosh, third; Whitewater, fourth and Starr’s Mill (Team B), fifth.

All of the varsity and junior varsity teams placing first through fifth at the regional competition were eligible to represent Griffin RESA at the state tournament at West Hall High School on January 24. Over 29 teams from school systems representing Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties participated in the regional competition.

Fayette County Whitewater’s InvenTeam on Discovery.com

The five Whitewater High students who won a $10,000 grant from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to make a prototype invention of a combined dehydrator/condenser have caught the attention of the Discovery Channel.

Their invention, aimed at dehydrating algae for use as biodiesel while simultaneously collecting purified water for drinking and other uses, is now featured on Discovery’s website as part of the channel’s sustainable news section. This will bring a lot of exposure to the students since almost six million people a day sign on to the website.

“This is really a honor for our students to be featured. People all over the world will know about their work and achievement,” says Carolyn Smith, one of the teachers working with the students on the invention.

The InvenTeam at Whitewater was one of only 16 high school teams across the country chosen to receive the Lemelson-MIT grant that will enable them to build a prototype of their idea and present it at a conference at MIT this spring. They are the first team in Fayette County to win a grant and only the second from Georgia.
