For the 15th time in 15 years, the Berry College Forensics team earned top honors in the Georgia Intercollegiate Forensics Association tournament held recently at Southern Polytechnic State University.
Berry speakers claimed individual championships in 10 of 12 events. Sophomore Joshua Roye was named top speaker, and seniors Hope Stallings and Amanda Dean earned the right to represent Georgia at the 137th Interstate Oratory Contest in Oxford, Miss., by placing first and second in persuasive speaking.
Individual award recipients were as follows:
-Hope Stallings placed first in informative speaking, persuasive speaking, rhetorical criticism and dramatic duo interpretation (with Alex Middleton) and second in poetry interpretation. Hope, a senior communication major, is the daughter of Stan and Angela Nix of Ringgold, Ga.
-Amanda Dean placed second in informative speaking and persuasive speaking, third in rhetorical criticism and fourth in poetry interpretation. Amanda, a senior communication major, is the daughter of John and Yevone Dean of Acworth, Ga.
-Joshua Roye finished first in pentathlon, editorial impromptu and impromptu speaking, second in rhetorical criticism, third in dramatic duo interpretation (with Erin Froetschel) and fourth in informative speaking. Joshua, a sophomore dual sociology/anthropology and religion/philosophy major, is the son of Tom and Gwendolyn Roye of Calhoun, Ga.
-Thomas Yungerberg placed first in program oral interpretation, second in dramatic duo interpretation (with Steven Walker) and fifth in prose interpretation. Thomas, a freshman communication major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Yungerberg of Canton, Ga.
-Alex Middleton finished first in dramatic duo interpretation (with Hope Stallings) and third in after dinner speaking and prose interpretation. Alex, a freshman communication major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Middleton of Stone Mountain, Ga.
-Kalia Miller placed third in persuasive speaking and sixth in impromptu speaking. Kalia, a freshman biology major, is the daughter of Ms. Donna Cargle of Crandall, Ga.
-Kali McMillian placed second in dramatic interpretation. Kali, a freshman theatre major, is the daughter of Ms. Sharon Sexton of Grayson, Ga.
-Steven Walker finished first in after dinner speaking and prose interpretation and second in dramatic duo interpretation (with Thomas Yungerberg). Steven, a freshman communication major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Walker of Lilburn, Ga.
-Erin Froetschel placed first in poetry interpretation, third in dramatic duo (with Joshua Roye) and fourth in after dinner speaking. Erin, a sophomore music major, is the daughter of Mark and Dana Froetschel of Crawford, Ga.
-John Hall finished third in program oral interpretation and fifth in editorial impromptu speaking. John, a senior government major, is the son of Beth Hall of Menlo, Ga.

Berry College Newspaper Staff Earns Numerous State Awards
The Campus Carrier, Berry College’s student newspaper, earned five staff awards and two individual honors in this year’s Georgia College Press Association (GCPA) Better Newspaper Contest. The winners were announced Feb. 7 at the GCPA Press Institute in Athens, Ga.
The Campus Carrier earned recognition for overall excellence within a variety of categories in Senior B Division, which includes all Georgia colleges and universities with enrollments under 8,000.
Kevin Kleine, lecturer of journalism and student publications adviser, lauded the efforts of his student journalists.
“Berry students are among the best anywhere,” Kleine stated. “I think this newspaper staff does its best to provide the community with content that matters.”
Group awards won by the Carrier staff are as follows:
-Third Place – Best Community Service – News
-Third Place – Best Community Service – Features
-Third Place – Best Community Service – Sports
-Third Place – Best Community Service – Editorial Excellence
-Third Place – Improvement Award
Individual awards (won in competition with four-year schools of all enrollments) include:
-Caleb Bloodworth – Second Place – Best Review. Caleb is the son of William and Lisa Bloodworth of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.
-Jay Zuckerman – Third Place – Best Sports Story
“We feel great to get recognition for our work,” said Ashton Staniszewski, editor of the Campus Carrier. “But the most important thing for us is to serve our fellow students with great coverage of the events and issues that our campus community cares about.
“We intend to improve in the future, and perhaps next year we can win this contest,” Staniszewski continued. “It is important to us to carry on a tradition of excellence in the quality of our student newspaper that has existed here for more than 100 years.” Staniszewski is the son of Roman and Ceres Staniszewski from Sarasota, Fla.
In addition to the contest results announced at the GCPA Press Institute, the organization also elected officers and board members for the coming year. Included in this group was Berry freshman Ashley McIntyre, daughter of Pauline and David McIntyre of Kennesaw, Ga., who will serve as secretary.

Berry College Speakers Excel at Ohio State University
Five members of the Berry College forensics team combined for a strong finish at the annual “Holiday Frolic” forensics tournament hosted by the Ohio State University in early December.
Berry finished third overall behind Western Kentucky University and Ohio University. A total of 27 colleges and universities took part in the competition. All five Berry competitors won individual awards in the tournament and qualified for nationals in their events.
Individual award recipients included:
-Hope Stallings, a senior communication major, finished first in persuasive speaking, first in rhetorical criticism, second in poetry interpretation, fourth in dramatic duo interpretation (with Alex Middleton) and sixth in informative speaking. She is the daughter of Stan and Angela Nix of Ringgold, Ga.
-Joshua Roye, a sophomore sociology and anthropology major, was first in novice impromptu speaking, fourth in novice prose interpretation and top novice in informative speaking. He is the son of Tom and Gwendolyn Roye of Calhoun, Ga.

Berry College Model U.N. Excels at Regional Conference
Twenty-four students representing Berry College’s Model United Nations club combined to win three awards at the November session of the 2008 Southern Regional United Nations Conference in Atlanta. More than 630 students participated in this conference, representing 73 Model U.N. countries.
Under the supervision of Dr. Kirsten Taylor, associate professor of government and international studies, the Berry students represented Nigeria and Cuba on several Model U.N. committees. They won two Position Paper Awards for their pre-conference preparation; additionally, first-year student Brin Enterkin won an honorable mention for her individual work as a delegate for the Commission on Sustainable Development.
“I am very proud of both the work that the club members put into preparing for the SRMUN Conference and their efforts to negotiate at the conference,” Dr. Taylor said. “This is a really dedicated group of students, and it’s a pleasure for me to work with them.”

-Lynn Cherry, a freshman international studies major, is the daughter of Ms. Maria Corazon Cherry of Chatham, Ga.

Speakers Shine in Music City
Six members of the Berry College forensics team claimed several individual awards and a second-place team finish during the Tennessee Porch Swing Tournament held in Nashville, Tenn., in mid-November.
A swing tournament is a special kind of speech competition consisting of two separate tournaments in one weekend. The first was hosted by Belmont University; the second was hosted by Carson-Newman College. Berry finished second overall in the Carson-Newman tournament, ahead of Clemson University, Florida State University and the University of Alabama. Five Berry competitors won individual awards and qualified for nationals in the two events.
Individual award recipients were as follows:
