Today, Atlanta Technical College President, Alvetta Peterman Thomas, a resident of Fayetteville, Georgia, was honored as one of the Atlanta Business League’s Women of Influence for 2010. Thomas was recognized for her strong leadership role in higher education and for exemplifying many of the attributes that make Atlanta a global leader in business and industry. The Atlanta Business League (ABL) honored 100 of Atlanta’s most impressive women on February 23 at the Fifteenth Annual Women of Vision Breakfast.
The Atlanta Business League was established in 1933 as an affiliate of the National Business League, and fosters the growth, creation, and development of successful business enterprises owned, operated, and managed by African-Americans in metropolitan Atlanta. Understanding that workforce training is critical in today’s business environment, the ABL honored Dr. Alvetta Thomas for her work in increasing the number of highly-qualified, work-ready graduates in the city.
Under Thomas’ leadership, the college has reached new heights with a 98 percent job placement rate, an increase in college enrollment of more than 40 percent, and the development of the Atlanta Technical College Institute for Males, which was designed to increase the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of African-American males. Later this year, this school will open a $14.2 million Allied Health and Technology Complex that is expected to further boost enrollment and position Atlanta Technical College as a leader in health-focused education.

Richard E. Besser, M.D. to receive “Mercy Moves Though Me Award from Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services
Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services will host its fifth Mercy Moves through Me Award celebration in the Georgian Ballroom of the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel on February 18 honoring Richard E. Besser, MD for his “committed and outstanding service and advocacy for the underserved.” This year’s Gold Sponsor for the event is UPS.
In September, 2009, Richard Besser, MD became ABC News’ senior health and medical editor. Prior to accepting this position, Besser served as director of the Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Besser served as Acting Director for the CDC and Acting Administrator for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry from January through June 2009, leading the CDC and its response to the “swine flu” influenza outbreak. He began his career at the CDC in 1991. Staff writer David Montgomery of the Washington Post said of him, ”He is a scientist who has mastered the healer’s delicate art of simultaneously projecting deep concern and profound calm, telling national audiences to worry but not to worry.”
Introducing the honoree will be friend and colleague Anne Schuchat, MD, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, CDC. Attending the luncheon will be Besser’s colleagues, community and business leaders, members of state legislature and city government, church leaders, Saint Joseph’s Health System and Mercy Care Services board members and staff and community partners.
The Mercy Moves through Me Award is given to individuals or organizations for committed and outstanding service or advocacy for the underserved. Inaugurated in 2005 in celebration of Mercy Care Services’ 20th anniversary, it has continued as an annual luncheon event and vehicle for honoring outstanding community servant leaders. Inaugural honorees were Mayor Shirley Franklin and Congressman John Lewis.
Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services is celebrating 25 years of offering a health care and health related services safety net to some of the city’s most needy citizens—new immigrants, persons experiencing homelessness, the uninsured and underinsured. Sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and Saint Joseph’s Health System, Mercy Care Services’ clinics have become the medical home for thousands throughout the metropolitan area.

Active Duty, Military Spouse Honored as Ashworth College Outstanding Graduate
/PRNewswire/ -- Ashworth College announced today that Ashworth alumnus Ervisa Ritt has been named Outstanding Graduate and presented with a certificate of recognition from the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The DETC annually recognizes graduates who have excelled as distance education students. Ritt is among 45 graduates from 37 accredited DETC member institutions to be recognized this year.
Ritt, who recently received her Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, has the distinction of being both active duty and a military spouse. She and her husband are currently stationed at Ft. Stewart Army Base in Georgia.
"Since earning my Associate Degree, I've gone on to enroll in Ashworth's Bachelor's Degree program," she said. "My education in criminal justice will benefit me when I finally transition to civilian life. My ultimate goal is to become a police officer and I will have Ashworth to thank for that."
Ritt indicated that the flexibility of Ashworth's courses have allowed her to continue her education online whether she's at home with her 3 1/2-year-old daughter, on base or stationed in the field.
"Ervisa is a great example of how online education can easily become part of everyday life and successfully balance family, career and studies," said Gary M. Keisling, Ashworth College Chairman and CEO. "She is clearly a role model and we're proud to have her as an Ashworth alumna."
Ashworth College and DETC also recognized Didiayer Snyder, two-time Ashworth College graduate and currently a team designer on the Emmy Award-winning Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Snyder was among a select few graduates who have achieved a degree of celebrity within their career field and continue to make positive contributions to the community.
"The most gratifying aspect of our work is reading about the success of the graduates of our accredited colleges," said Michael P. Lambert, DETC Executive Director.
"Our success is best viewed through the lens of what has happened to our graduates -- how they put their knowledge and skills to work to make a better life...how they achieve their goals."
